birthday wish list

I have a birthday coming up in a month and I’ve been asked for gift ideas. I really {really!} don’t expect much. My perfect day would include: take the day off work. Get myself a giant vanilla latte. Work on craft projects, look at magazines and books, and sleep in the sun all day. Have dinner cooked for me {at home, not at a restaurant!}. And might include a cupcake, bonus if it’s a super cute one.

Buuuut, since I was asked what might tickle my fancy, here are a few things I sure wouldn’t mind getting. (:

1. Kitchen goodies. A food processor or a panini press and grill.

2. A cute lil dress. Like this or this.

3. Cool colored boots that will extend the birthday cheer til Fall when I can actually wear them! Love these ones. Or some go-with-everything black wedges for the office. The perfect ones allude me so I don’t own any, but I neeeeeeeed some. These are pretty cute.

4. Amy Butler fabric to spruce up the kitchen and bedroom. How do you narrow it down, though?

5. Some Keen hiking boots. So practical, but these would be awesome to have.

What’s on your wish list right now?

some winter wardrobe staples

Only five weeks in on the challenge, and I’m paying attention to the things I would like to shell out for for next fall/winter season to really expand my wardrobe options. Here are what I consider the winter wardrobe staples I’m lacking {click here for sources}. I’ll keep a look out for thrift versions in the mean time.

On the list: clockwise from top-left: A simple black fitted vest {I’d wear the hell out of it!}, a versatile work-appropriate dress {summer appropriate or over tights in winter}, a cute fitted blazer {I like this military-style one so much}, a colorful pea coat, a chunky men’s-style watch, comfy brown boots, mid-wash skinny jeans, a simple but fun clutch, black platform Mary Janes {go with pants and skirts fabulously, though not this spiky of heel}, some wide-leg trouser-style jeans {I love these J Crew ones}.

{PS, do you Polyvore? If you do, you can add me.}

fashion distraction

Don’t you think one of the best things about winter is getting to wear crazy tights and awesome boots?

It is SNOWING today for the first time this season and I’m pretending to hate it. I mean, I will hate it by tomorrow for sure. But today it’s inspired me to drag out all my tights and hats and scarves. And read lots of fashion blogs. Because suddenly I get to wear MORE LAYERS! And incorporate OUTERWEAR! And if I skip the gym and drink too much spiked eggnog NO ONE WILL KNOW UNTIL SPRING! So yeah, ok, I totally hate winter but I love putting away the shorts and tank tops.

And also…. I should be plugging away at cramming for my Accounting midterm, but I’ve got a 20-minute attention span for things I hate. One positive of homework-avoidance is I get lots of other undesirable tasks done when I should be studying. Like grocery shopping, cleaning the floors, getting an oil change, marathon-cooking? CHECK. Those all suddenly seem less horrible pitted against the alternative. My fridge is full and my house is clean but reeks of pot roast and potatoes.  Pot roast and potatoes I can now EAT and hide my sins under wool and corduroy for months.
